Well, it's the start of the second Bank Holiday of May, and it's pouring with rain, cold (a measly 7 degrees!) and there's a robin in the bird-bath......... is it REALLY May ?    I went out food-shopping this morning in the wet but I'm not stepping out again today if I can help it !  The first Bank Holiday of the month the lovely Ricardo (aka [livejournal.com profile] bazanges) was here for the weekend and it really did feel like Spring.................. especially with having some lovely gelati at Amorino in Soho

followed immediately by a second sitting at Gelupo (round the corner)

........this was after Franco and I had a pre-booked visit to the wonderful "this year's must-see" exhibition "Life and Death - Pompeii and Herculaneum",  whilst Ricardo "cruised" the mummies (and goodness knows what/who else!)     ..................... and looked for his some marbles (the Elgin ones !!)

May has been a "hospital month" for my mother..... I was with her the last weekend in April, and in spite of some breathing issues early in the mornings we managed to get out and about (with the sun showing its face now and then) and enjoy the daffodils in the countryside etc.  Towards the end of the following week, however, her health deteriorated and she ended up in hospital for almost two weeks. The good thing to come out of it was that she was taken to the hospital that has a very good cardiac department, and that they found her heart-failure is what is really at the bottom of her breathing and lung problems. It appears that if she'd not made it there at that time she was so ill she may not be still "with us".  I made a one day visit which cheered her up a bit.  She was then home over last weekend and doing quite well but had a relapse, so has been in a second hospital until yesterday..... we're hoping it's all a bit more settled now.  As a side issue, they have some concerns regarding some "lumps", so next week it's back for some more tests and a biopsy, but only for the day. Luckily she has had some excellent doctors and nurses (with the inevitable odd exceptions).  I have a regular weekend visit booked in the middle of June, so hopefully we may be able to get out a bit.

I also gave my first guided tour at the Garden Museum recently........... "could do better" I put on my own report card.... but at least I know what I should do next time !!  There were some lovely flowers left over from "an event" to cheer me up.....

So now I need to try and catch up with what has been going on with all my LJ friends................................it may take me some time.

The lovely Ricardo (aka [livejournal.com profile] bazanges) has joined us for a few days of R&R, which very nicely coincided with three days of glorious weather over the weekend.  Today the temperature has returned to normal, it's rather gloomy and threatening to rain.  We had a rather lazy couple of days after a busy week, so got to enjoy the relaxed feeling good weather brings with it.

Yesterday we ventured as far as our local plant nursery for tea and cake, it's only two streets away, so not too far to stroll......

Franco (aka [livejournal.com profile] london1967) had his halo on and just had tea !  Ricardo had a slice of frosted blueberry cake, and I had coffee & walnut cake.

Earlier in the day, with the sun streaming through the sitting room window and catching the glass drop hanging from the centre catch Franco caught the rainbow (which just goes to prove he definitely is my gold at the end of the rainbow!)

london1952: (Default)
We had a whole week of blue skies and sun in Sitges, the most consistently lovely weather we've ever had there, and I think late June could now be my preferred time to be there.... it had a fresh look to it, flowers, greenery, and not too many people.  Our favoured beach was quite a bit smaller this year, due, I believe, to some very heavy storms in March which took away a fair amount of sand...so we saw rocks which had previously been covered and felt closer to the water. There certainly won't be much room for all the bigger bears in September !

The lovely Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges) always gets to the beach early to ensure we get "our" sun-loungers in the spot we like and gets to enjoy the peace and tranquillity for an hour or so before it starts getting busy. Apart from at the weekend the mornings were rather a relaxed affair, taking until lunchtime to get busy.

Although it's rather lovely seeing the sights during the day, there is something magical about enjoying the view before it all starts (somebody must have been early to "book" their space at the front - the group of four arrived a good two hours later).

The weather here has been a great disappointment since we returned.......... more like November than July !!  So our healthy looks have already returned to the pale !!
london1952: (Default)
Just over a week ago the lovely Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges) was staying with us for a few days for the second half of the Easter holidays, and on the Tuesday we went to visit the RHS Greater London Plant Fair held at the Horticultural Halls not far from Victoria.  We arrived barely half an hour after opening time, but still saw a couple of Miss Marple-style ladies already leaving with their bags filled with plants purchased - having, no doubt bagged the best specimens on sale !  We started our foray in a much more relaxed way and enjoyed hot chocolate and danish pastry before moving on to the flowers.  I'd forgotten how determined the largely over-60's middle-England brigade are when it comes to obtaining the best-in-show, or rather the best-on-sale, but we soon got into the swing using elbows, bags and (apparently) blinkered vision.....and Ricardo uses his walking stick like one of the three musketeers !! LOL

Considering I was just going to look, I got away quite lightly having only bought four plants and one bulb ! A "black" viola, a penstemon, a lily called "Gay Bird" (who could resist the name and vivid colours promised on a photograph), a blue auricula - which now has a story attached, but more of that in due course!, and the bulb is a pineapple lily

In amongst the stalls were various judged competitions, and also set-pieces displaying the medals they had been awarded (if lucky) on the day.

I guess these daffodils didn't quite make it to the individuals !

Ricardo managed to avoid having his photo taken, clever of him, remiss of me.....and, no, he's not wearing Victorian garb, or Oriental loveliness........... though if he were it's more likely to have been the yellow !!

Our lovely friend Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges) was due to visit us for a few days last week, but has instead had a couple of weeks stay in hospital.... so I thought I'd surprise him on Friday by turning up unannounced at afternoon visiting time. Direct trains from London to Gloucester (and back) are surprisingly few, so I booked tthe nearest either side of the hospital visiting hours which gave me just over an hour extra on arrival. Gloucester Cathedral is apparently well worth a visit so, as it's not too far from the station, I looked forward to having a look around and made sure I remembered my camera. Gloucester itself is "not much to write about" but the historical part around the catherdal has some lovely buildings, though blighted by the many parked cars and vehicles, so many that it just seemed pointless to take many photographs, and, I couldn't believe it, the catherdral was closed to visitors all afternoon.  Hoards of guys in army fatiques were assembling outside as well as many of them patronising most of the nearby food shops and cafes, and a number of high-ranking officials, medals everywhere,  together with ladies "of a certain age" smartly dressed in black or purple or a mixture of both. No explanation was given, I'm assuming it was some sort of memorial service perhaps.

So, as the historical docks were also nearby I decided to see if I would fare any better, but as it had clouded over and the area was deserted I didn't waste much time there, and in any case I needed to head for the hospital (which has the appearance of a barracks !)

Though on a "six degrees of seperation-type thingy" the large restored old crane I saw was manufactured in Rodley (now part of Leeds) an area I know well and have had some association with.  The old Crane Works still stand (in part) but of course haven't been in use for years and the area is all residential now.

and from a bit of research... an old letter-head image of the company......

And a map of Gloucester dated 1805...........................

Hopefully, the lovely Ricardo will be "back to normal" and home soon...... and visiting us soon after that.

After a weekend in Yorkshire enjoying the sunny Autumnal weather, returning to London yesterday and a cold wind, and a house that felt like a refrigerator, my mind jumped back to only a few weeks ago, which now seems months ago, when we were living in tee-shirts, shorts, and sometimes even less !!  It's even more noticable as we had a recent week of "Indian Summer"........ but now it's back to "seasonable" !

When I came to the computer at 9am this morning it was showing the temperature as 9 degreesC, the first time in single figures for some considerable time ! .......... Brrrrrrr ! ...........I'm really not looking forward to the coming cold months !

So, the gorgeous[livejournal.com profile] london1967 and lovely [livejournal.com profile] bazanges take in a few rays at the beginning of September............. as the song goes, Oh, "Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer" !

The early-bird(s) get the sun-beds !

After a hard morning of eye-candy-gazing and lunch someone needs a nap !  sound effects and all !! LOL

And in the evening it's Ricardo's turn to entertain........ Note: the large bottle of water is only for the saintly Franco ! LOL .......A gin bottle of the same size is out of frame !!

And looking forward to their long-awaited Paella in a small local restaurant we discovered last year........ being a little "squeamish" I settled on steak and chips (boring)  !

london1952: (Default)

Well, we are welcoming a couple of LJers (well, one writer!) to dinner this evening, hopefully all the trouble of the last few days has settled now in London and it is safe to venture out in the evening as normal..... it will be good to meet after reading the journal for some time now.

The chicken is marinating in a honey and mustard dressing in the fridge, and I'll be rolling out shortcrust pastry shortly ....... which all reminds me that when Ricardo (bazanges) and I were in France recently, he took on the mantle of "Domestic Goddess" for the week...... So much so that I jokingly said we should do a book on his cookery !

So, for the full (Nigella) effect, choose the outfit, pose and pout !!

bacon frittata....................  and lasagne

duck breasts... pre-orange and cherry liqueur sauce....... and in Julia-Child-voice "Don't crowd the mushrooms Richard !"

nectarines baked in brandy...........     and a pea, bean and potato bake...

something's hot in the kitchen !!!!          .......... pork chops with apple cooked in maple syrup and cider

a very gracious wave from the host !

Gin Time !!! .......and someone obviously doesn't know when to stop !!

Continuing from my "French" post of yesterday, Franco managed to find my missing photographs on the camera...... note to self: wear your glasses when using the camera (they were in the clipboard feature!)

So, more of Boussac and the lovely garden.....
...the 12th century chateau/ castle in the distance

..... a new, well 15th century, house for Ricardo !  ....maybe not quite yet !

And missing from my Aubusson collection.......................

Afternoon tea taken in the garden of Rue du Puits Chambres d'Hotes in Boussac is just lovely...........

I seem to be missing some photographs now I think of it, (I've no idea why!) so here's a couple from the website

Moutier d'Ahun is a very small picturesque village, so-called after the Benedictine Abbey founded on the site around the year 997. The church retains various remnants, and there are traces amongst various houses through the village which leads down to the Romanesque bridge which crosses the Rive Creuse......

Ummmm, hello, the other gate is open !!!

Ricardo chose this house due to a R and D on the door.....

.............in the recesses of mind this tune stepped forward.....

Aubusson

london1952: (Default)

Two weeks ago today Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) and I were in Aubusson, dodging the rain showers on the way there.  As it's historically famous for being a centre for the manufacture of tapestries and carpets I was expecting a rather larger place, but in reality found it to be a fairly small and quaint town, very pretty in parts.  The only disconcerting thing was that there is piped music in a couple of the main streets, French or classical music I may have understood, but Tom Jones, and the like, I have to draw the line at - who thought of that !! - just too weird......

So, Aubusson has existed since Roman times, but it was in the 14th century that it became famous for it's textiles, and in the 17th century the workshops were given "Royal Appointment" status, and examples can be seen in all the palaces, notable house and castles throughout  Europe.  The French Revolution, and then the "arrival" of wallpaper, caused a downturn in popularity, but tapestries made something of a comeback in the 1930's when artists such as Cocteau, Dufy, Dali and Picasso were invited to express themselves through the medium of wool.

Sadly, the population of the town has been dropping since the 1970's and is now less than it was in the 1820's...... along with what seems the rest of rural France it feels like 75% of Aubusson is for sale, or just falling down, with bargain properties available to anyone who has the money to spare.... not many in this current world-wide financial climate !  But part of the beauty of the town is in the delapidated buldings and unspoilt areas.

Ricardo poses on Le Ponte de le Terrade over the fast-flowing River Creuse, the exceptionally soft, clear and clean water of which is the reason the textile workers chose to set up business here.

A lovely town residence !

Three of the many properties on offer at (compered to the UK) exceptionally low prices and with wonderful potential.....

I managed to chose (unknown to me) a cafe for a coffee that was the "gay" one in town - Ricardo, however, was not suprised !

Doors, doors, doors !

New meets Old !  - a rather nice footbridge across the river.

And "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" !  ............oh yeah, pulverise me !

(though he does look slightly mad !! LOL)

london1952: (Default)

It's been pushing 30c this week, and according to the thermometer in our side garden (shaded) it's 31c this afternoon - proper summer - and just the sort of weather Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) and I had envisaged for our week in France (aka[livejournal.com profile] london1967 's Driving Miss Daisy Ricardo !). Instead we had 16c -18c and rain showers most days... a little sun but only enough for a couple of hours with our tops off !  On the plus side, Ricardo did get the things done he'd planned to do around his house, mainly on the land, and we did some local(ish) sight-seeing too.

Lord of the Manor ! (or Lady of the House ! LOL)

Our journey from Penge via Victoria, Stansted Airport, a Ryanair Flight featuring the lovely Gemma in charge of cabin crew, Limoges Airport, and an hour and a bit drive, all went wonderfully well and on time... delivering us to this country idyll for a bit of Marie Antoinette down-time !

is the nearest village, for our daily (except Sunday) pilgrimage for wonderful freshly baked bread for breakfast

On a shopping expedition slightly further afield ........

Oh my goodness !!  ............. and, my, what big tomatoes !!

TO BE CONTINUED ......

london1952: (Default)

Way back in April, the lovely David and Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) entertained us for the weekend, which included a visit to the RHS Spring show. The company was glorious (as ever) as was the weather !

The show was a most enjoyable start the the season of what feels like “full-on” gardening, and the sun ensured a large crowd at the show, and in the grounds of Cardiff Castle where it is held.

A reminder of Spring.......

David slaved away in the kitchen all weekend, providing us with lots of delicious food, including a delightful blackberry and apple crumble..... yum !

…. and we got to spend some time chillaxing, with the odd gin or three..............  and much to Franco's surprise/horror, a crisp(chips sandwich for me !!

and David's garden was looking wonderful......................

Well, I think that's enough photos for one day !! ...... so long as they post !!

Following "Love is in the Air" a few days ago, it is starting to feel like Spring is in the Air now !

The lovely Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) was staying with us for a long weekend, and I was able to get him a place on an outing on Tuesday to the Chelsea Physic Garden arranged by the horticultural intern, Ben, from the Garden Museum for the volunteers. It wasn't the best day weather-wise (damp rather than wet !) but it was lovely nonetheless to be guided around the historical gardens by a very knowledgeable guide and see the garden coming to life, and it was busy with gardeners "doing their stuff".  It's not normally open until April but there are always a couple of open weekends dedicated to snowdrops in February, so it was a double treat to get in midweek for an "exclusive" show!

We were then treated to a warming cup of coffee at the cafe of the nearby Army Museum.  By chance there was also a Spring Show going on at the Royal Horticultural Halls, and as Ricardo is a member of the RHS it would have been rude not to have paid a visit (and spend some money!)
Some wonderful things on display....................

..................... and, of course, more snowdrops !!

....... and Ricardo surveying our plot !!

After a long day it was time for feet up and a large gin (or two!)

A certain person (with an "innocent" grin) has a penchant for all things chocolate !!........ particularly ice-cream truffle bon-bons....... of course, there is another ice-cream-aholic too !

Last weekend the lovely Ricardo (aka[livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) came to stay for a few days.  Franco (aka [livejournal.com profile] london1967 ) detailed the first few days whilst we were all together, but during the day on Monday, whilst Franco was hard at work, Ricardo and I took a trip shopping in Croydon.... not the most exciting place in the world.... and we'd forgotten the school holidays had started, so everywhere was over-run with screaming bratts!!

So on Tuesday I suggested we when for a walk in a local park... Kelsey Park in Beckenham.  It's a lovely place, well maintained, and had some quite striking (for a local council) colour-schemed summer planted areas.

Ricardo wasn't too sure about these clashing colours, but the mix really appealed to me !

We needed to catch a bus up to Beckenham, but after 20 minutes we gave up and decided to have lunch as there was obviously a problem with the bus service....... I had never been in the KFC restaurant in Penge high street, and Ricardo needed no persuading, so we paid it a visit !

..... maybe a slightly more generous-sized shirt next time Ricardo !! LOL - evil, moi ??!! (Luckily no pics of me!)

london1952: (Default)
A couple of weeks ago the lovely Ricardo aka [livejournal.com profile] bazanges  was staying with us and thought he might (re)launch himself on LJ, however, the "silence" so far has been deafening!! lol...

Looking for inspiration (and which button to press)............................................. and off we go!

Sadly, it seems the gin didn't work ! - That means it will have to be treble measures next time !!

I think he needs some LJ friends to spur him on !!

Enough said!!

Ricardo ([livejournal.com profile] bazanges ) says he was resting his legs ! .........Apparently!!

September, so it must be Sitges!!

First evening out, starting with dinner at  .... big portions of (english-friendly) comfort food !!

Last June we spent a few wonderfully relaxing days with Ricardo and David in the (very green) Creuse region in France.

Ricardo has a house there, which he has been, and still is, painstakingly renovating from the delapidated state it was in when he bought it a few years ago.  The house is located in a small hamlet comprising of 9 dwellings (some of which are rarely used second homes) and the surrounding area is a picture of rural charm. The only noise you really hear is the cows... seemingly sending messages to each other! and the local farmer passing on his tractor.

So here is the only photo I took on my mobile phone....... David playing the ventriloquist's dummy sat on Ricardo's knee!!

Red marks the location of Creuse in France, together with the coat of arms

Not sure it's a good idea looking at all these (last) summer photos when it's cold, grey and damp outside now!
