Well, it's the start of the second Bank Holiday of May, and it's pouring with rain, cold (a measly 7 degrees!) and there's a robin in the bird-bath......... is it REALLY May ?    I went out food-shopping this morning in the wet but I'm not stepping out again today if I can help it !  The first Bank Holiday of the month the lovely Ricardo (aka [livejournal.com profile] bazanges) was here for the weekend and it really did feel like Spring.................. especially with having some lovely gelati at Amorino in Soho

followed immediately by a second sitting at Gelupo (round the corner)

........this was after Franco and I had a pre-booked visit to the wonderful "this year's must-see" exhibition "Life and Death - Pompeii and Herculaneum",  whilst Ricardo "cruised" the mummies (and goodness knows what/who else!)     ..................... and looked for his some marbles (the Elgin ones !!)

May has been a "hospital month" for my mother..... I was with her the last weekend in April, and in spite of some breathing issues early in the mornings we managed to get out and about (with the sun showing its face now and then) and enjoy the daffodils in the countryside etc.  Towards the end of the following week, however, her health deteriorated and she ended up in hospital for almost two weeks. The good thing to come out of it was that she was taken to the hospital that has a very good cardiac department, and that they found her heart-failure is what is really at the bottom of her breathing and lung problems. It appears that if she'd not made it there at that time she was so ill she may not be still "with us".  I made a one day visit which cheered her up a bit.  She was then home over last weekend and doing quite well but had a relapse, so has been in a second hospital until yesterday..... we're hoping it's all a bit more settled now.  As a side issue, they have some concerns regarding some "lumps", so next week it's back for some more tests and a biopsy, but only for the day. Luckily she has had some excellent doctors and nurses (with the inevitable odd exceptions).  I have a regular weekend visit booked in the middle of June, so hopefully we may be able to get out a bit.

I also gave my first guided tour at the Garden Museum recently........... "could do better" I put on my own report card.... but at least I know what I should do next time !!  There were some lovely flowers left over from "an event" to cheer me up.....

So now I need to try and catch up with what has been going on with all my LJ friends................................it may take me some time.

Wishing Tomaz (aka [livejournal.com profile] paterson_si) a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!

What's that bright thing outside ? ...my goodness it's the sun !! I've been very brave and watered the garden and all the pots as everything was so dry, but with so much frost recently it didn't seem a good idea before now........ quite a few of the bulbs in the pots seem a bit slow or stunted, I'm sure it's a mix of cold and dry, so there, I've done it !

It's the mildest day since we returned from Italy last Tuesday...... I'm VERY behind (as usual) posting anything about the wonderful week we had.

Our week in Le Marche started off with rain (heavy), fog (thick) and snow (picturesque!). In fact without the sat-nav I doubt we would have found the hotel we were staying at near Urbino.  The view from our room window when we arrived was.....

....luckily the next morning we could see what was really there.....

We ate dinner in the restaurant attached to the hotel that evening and saw snow falling outside.  We also spotted something "unusual" on the menu....

We settled instead for a beer (an rare shot of [livejournal.com profile] london1967 with alcohol!) and a pizza........

sadly, no room in the suitcase for either of these lovelies !

which were about 5' tall !

Death......

Old-fashioned I know, but I was always brought up to not speak ill of the dead.  Margaret Thatcher died today and of course lots of people are delighted, and not afraid to say so in the lowest terms...... a number of people have already, and quite honestly I would have hoped for, or dare I say expected a bit more reserve from them. I guess now it's just accepted that people can have their say, after all it's a "free country", but really nastiness isn't a very nice trait .... but it does give a(nother) insight into their character.

She was a strong leader, right or wrong....... I'm not sure what people think would have happened to our country if she'd not been around.... I've never heard a balanced argument, only hate and we all know where that gets us.......

to [livejournal.com profile] susandennis , hope you had a great time !

Sorry it's late, we were living-it-large in Italy !

Surprise !

What a lovely surprise when Franco ([livejournal.com profile] london1967) came home from work last night !!  Thank you so much !!

Yesterday morning we left Ravenna under a blanket of heavy rain which had started the evening before and carried on non-stop all the way to Bologna airport (including a little mosaic stop-off!). It seems it was a wet day all over Italy. It very rarely happens, but we arrived back in the UK (at Heathrow) to brilliant sunshine and blue sky, albeit it still very chilly. It's not often we go away for a week and come back to find the garden exactly the way we left it - all the spring bulbs frozen in time !!

Today is back to grey !! And it's amazing, after a full week of doing quite a lot of sight-seeing etc, how today has whizzed by with me doing very little............. laundry, light-dusting, and lazing (and gazing) at the computer !!

These little fellows amused me in Fano (a small town on the coast in Le Marche.......

.....you certainly wouldn't want to run into them with your car !  After my rant about the never-ending graffiti and rubbish in Naples, I must say Le Marche region looks exceptionally well-cared-for.... so a bit of humour always makes me smile.

And today marks the 14th Anniversary of the day I met the absolutely wonderful Franco ([livejournal.com profile] london1967) !!! - he makes my life complete, and so it really was the best day of my life !! (and all the days since...)

A Memorial

Whilst we were watching the 10 o'clock BBC News last night we saw someone being interviewed (about today's Budget - yawn) and I spotted this memorial in the background.  A couple of weeks ago I'd walked from the Museum to meet Franco in Leicester Square, and as it was one of the first "light" evenings I passed through Victoria Tower Gardens at the side of the Houses of Parliament and took some snaps.......

The Buxton Memorial Fountain is a memorial and drinking fountain that commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834.   It was commissioned by Charles Buxton MP, and was dedicated to his father Thomas Fowell Buxton along with William Wilberforce and the others who were involved in the abolition.  It was designed by Gothic architect Samuel Sanders Teulon in 1865 in coincidence to the passing of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution....effectively ending the western slave-trade.

I wonder how many people pass it and have no idea what it's for or about.......

A reproduction of Rodin's "The Burghers of Calais" - see below - and a statue commemorating Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the suffragette movement that helped women win the right to vote (not shown) are also in the gardens....

A couple of jet vapour trails do an "X Factor" high above Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square........

My mother gave Franco [livejournal.com profile] london1967 an Amaryllis bulb for Christmas, it's not quite as dark as the picture on the box indicated but it is a wonderful colour..... the first flower-head has died but I think there is a little sign at the base of the leaves that another bud may be coming.......

without and with flash

The two orchids my mother chose for Mother's Day (the cream one is from Christmas) and some flowers I got her too....

Our auriculas have really suffered over the winter and I thought we might loose them all, but on a not-to-chilly dry day a couple of weeks ago I re-potted them all, finding more bits of roots that I thought, and in spite of over-night frosts and hail they appear to be pulling through.......... it looks like a nursery full of premature babies !

Despite the snow, frost, hail, bitter winds and heavy rain, "Spring" is valiantly on its way...the garden is full of little splashes of colour !

What next, Easter Bunnies around the corner !!
london1952: (main)
With the lovely Alex and Mike (at their's) on Friday evening for a delicious dinner and a catch-up....we last saw them at The Panto at the beginning of January..... just where does the time go !  It was rather a damp journey home, and it's still raining so it's been something of a hibernation weekend for me............

london1952: (Default)
On Friday afternoon there was a get-together at the Garden Museum to formally introduce all the "new" staff who have come to work (paid) mainly behind-the-scenes....it's been feeling distinctly like "them and us" since the beginning of the year.... we also had some updates regarding the proposed "Phase 2" of the development of the Museum.  I think most of us (volunteers) were thinking we'd get a chance to "air" a few things....... but in the event that was somewhat nicely side-stepped LOL ! - maybe for the best, or we may have ended up there all evening and with a slightly less than jolly atmosphere !

There was also an organised light-hearted "Bake Off", which apparently was my idea...... I must have said something in the past and it had been remembered !   There was a wonderful array of delicious baked goods, the overall winner was a lovely fresh raspberry Bakewell Tart, and my favourite was Beatrice's chocolate dipped honey flapjack, she'd asked for ideas for decoration and I suggested making marzipan bees........ she added fresh violets.

As for me I trialled a rose chocolate cake, which turned out ok and attracted the "show-stopper" rosette, but I found it a bit bland..... it's quite difficult to judge how much rose to include without it tasting of shower-gel !!

It was nice to catch up with some of the other volunteers, as it's only every so often many of us are in the building at the same. At the same time it seemed amazing that a month had already passed since the opening night of the latest large temporary exhibition "Floriculture" - aptly on 14th February....... the fresh rose art installation is still looking good, the (around 3,000) roses have dried now and gives it a different look, but is still a real eye-catcher, and is certainly a talking point with all visitors.....

So, a few images from the opening........

last-minute touches to the garden-inspired canapes.....

My scheduled weekend in Leeds with my mother didn't go quite according to plan, as she was unwell on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday we did managed to go for our usual "pensioner's special" fish & chip treat and do a number of chores using the car...... she also chose two orchids for her Mother's Day gift... we were going to get a couple of patio rose bushes but she thought she'd like something indoor so she could see it from her easy-chair.....   We had booked for dinner out on Sunday evening and she insisted that I still went with my sister and two nephews as she was feeling a bit better (and it was Mother's Day for my sister after all).... I think secretly she wasn't too upset staying home, as it was bitterly cold and snowing, and the last episodes of the current series of both "Call the Midwife" and "Mr Selfridge" were on, so she didn't miss them ! LOL   Monday she was almost back to "normal" so I was able to return home in time for the lovely [livejournal.com profile] london1967's return from Italy.

Yesterday the garden just looked so sad, as the wind and freezing conditions had flattened all the early daffodils and crocuses.... thankfully most of them seem in a slightly better state today as it's a degree or two milder.  I'd also like to stay "tucked up" inside today but I have an ultra-sound examination on my shoulder later this afternoon...hopefully we'll find out about the pain in my arm......

A couple of weeks ago I came across this old image of a building that stands at the side of the railway station we use to travel into central London on the outward journey.... we live equidistant between two stations and get off at the other on the way home.

I hadn't realised an IRA bomb exploded on a train at the station in February 1993, luckily a warning had been given so the area had been evacuated so only the carriage was badly damaged.

We've not seen the much-lauded film "Life of Pi" but this really did amuse me.......

I must admit to spending more time than I should on FaceBook.......... I must concentrate a bit more on LJ !

Whilst I've been away from LJ lately I seem to have missed wishing a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to [livejournal.com profile] jeffurrynpl and [livejournal.com profile] kung_fu_monkey I hope you both had wonderful days !!

As part of Franco's ([livejournal.com profile] london1967) day out on Saturday we had a very special afternoon tea at The Goring Hotel.  It's the hotel Kate left on the morning of her wedding to William last year, so we expecting something good, but it exceeded expectations..... as Franco said afterwards, 5* surroundings, 5* food, 5* service = 5* hotel !

Before tea we visited the Shard, the tallest building in Western Europe, which opened to visitors at the beginning of February.  The experience of gaining entry was a touch underwhelming, we expected something slicker, but the ride in the lift to the 33nd floor took half a minute with the minimum of ear-popping, and then a second lift took us to the 68th floor and the observation deck where you get a fantastic all-round view of London and beyond, lived up to expectations.  A flight of stairs up and you are on the the open-to-the-elements view deck which certainly adds to the experience with the breeze blowing around you.

During construction a fox lived for 2 weeks on the 72nd floor apparently living on the leftovers the builders had discarded, he was named Romeo and has been rehoused (probably he's the one sunbathing on our gazebo roof!)... and he even opened another opportunity for fleecing selling to the visitors..........

The only way is UP !!

After tea and a stroll through St James's Park there was just time for a quick Aperol before our visit the the theatre to see The Supreme Fabulettes ! - - - - Fabulous !

london1952: (Default)
At the weekend I was up in Yorkshire on one of my scheduled visits to spend time with my mother. She was in good form though a little tired on the Saturday, as she'd had a poor night of sleep on Friday, but we still got out-and-about.  ..And I only "snapped" once during the whole time there LOL.

When I arrived on Friday the car-hire company had decided to "up-grade" me, and so I ended up driving this car.  My sister christened me "boy-racer" for the duration, and it was very easy to locate in a car-park !!  On returning it on Monday I made everyone in the office laugh by saying that I was sure people would probably expect the car to be first off at traffic-lights etc so would be shocked to see me and my mother taking it all at a stately pace !   Franco ([livejournal.com profile] london1967) would say it's a "mid-life crisis car" !!

We surprised my sister by calling in at the cafe she runs in Leeds city centre, the church it's "attached" to I will post about in due course, on our way to what has turned into obligatory visit for a "Pensioner's Special" at Murgatroyd's.
Large Haddock, chips and mushy peas is my new favourite main course, I never have any room left for the included dessert LOL

On Saturday we drove to the outskirts of Harrogate to visit a fairly new venture called Fodder.  My sister took my mother a couple of weeks ago to see what it was like.... she's been raving about it ever since..... It's rather like an indoors Farmer's Market..... reminded me of San Francisco's Ferry Building market slightly...  They also have a cafe/restaurant .... the food was very good, service excellent too...

My "Farmer's Lunch".............

The interior........

The weather forecast was for snow on Sunday/Monday, which we got, but luckily not enough to cause any problems coming home to the lovely Franco !

.....and "who ate all the pies?" LOL, our newest garden visitor......

london1952: (Default)
So, pizza, it originates from Naples and was "street-food" until the 1830s when pizza restaurants began to open, and we expected to try a couple whilst there.  We did attempt to eat at a trattoria one night (for a non-pizza meal) but had such a strange experience trying to get a table we gave up and left in the end........

Three pizzerias on one block all belong to one family, they have been there for years and apparently there are 21 siblings/relatives working in them... I'm guessing with some rivalry ! The one with the biggest "queue" outside was Sorbillo, Gino's one, but we found a few doors down another one of the Sorbillo's clan and got a table straight away.

Fast service, a very sweet waitress, and a great pizza (one of the best I've had)...  lovely and fresh ingredients...

as with other pizzerias in Naples, coffee is not an option at the end of a meal, so I had to "make do" with a glass of limoncello whilst Franco enjoyed a lemon dessert.

The next evening, after the aborted attempt at the trattoria we tried another pizzeria further up the street, a very tight fit at a draughty table...but again, once the order was taken the food arrived in next to no time....... so, it's just the base that's baked, with green salad, rocket, tomatoes, mozzarella and parmesan added - it was divine ! well, at least I thought so.....  so fresh !

The next evening we dined at what appeared to be a "chain" restaurant, however the guy seemingly in charge ran it as if it were his own (ie: well).... no food photos except to show the novel way the bread came to the table, and the "themed" crockery, the design of which I thought was great...

On the last evening we decided to eat "early" and managed the get a table in "the" Sorbillo....all I can say is surly staff, very draughty table, BUT great pizza brought to the table unbelievably quickly !!

Apparently a fire virtually gutted this particular restaurant last year, and they were left with a stain on the wall that looked like a vision (??) so left the area undecorated.........  maybe "Picasso woz 'ere!"

Surprisingly for such a large city there was not a lot of choice of places to eat...... but all three pizzas I had were exceptional, and a fraction of what they cost in the UK.......
