So, pizza, it originates from Naples and was "street-food" until the 1830s when pizza restaurants began to open, and we expected to try a couple whilst there.  We did attempt to eat at a trattoria one night (for a non-pizza meal) but had such a strange experience trying to get a table we gave up and left in the end........

Three pizzerias on one block all belong to one family, they have been there for years and apparently there are 21 siblings/relatives working in them... I'm guessing with some rivalry ! The one with the biggest "queue" outside was Sorbillo, Gino's one, but we found a few doors down another one of the Sorbillo's clan and got a table straight away.

Fast service, a very sweet waitress, and a great pizza (one of the best I've had)...  lovely and fresh ingredients...

as with other pizzerias in Naples, coffee is not an option at the end of a meal, so I had to "make do" with a glass of limoncello whilst Franco enjoyed a lemon dessert.

The next evening, after the aborted attempt at the trattoria we tried another pizzeria further up the street, a very tight fit at a draughty table...but again, once the order was taken the food arrived in next to no time....... so, it's just the base that's baked, with green salad, rocket, tomatoes, mozzarella and parmesan added - it was divine ! well, at least I thought so.....  so fresh !

The next evening we dined at what appeared to be a "chain" restaurant, however the guy seemingly in charge ran it as if it were his own (ie: well).... no food photos except to show the novel way the bread came to the table, and the "themed" crockery, the design of which I thought was great...

On the last evening we decided to eat "early" and managed the get a table in "the" Sorbillo....all I can say is surly staff, very draughty table, BUT great pizza brought to the table unbelievably quickly !!

Apparently a fire virtually gutted this particular restaurant last year, and they were left with a stain on the wall that looked like a vision (??) so left the area undecorated.........  maybe "Picasso woz 'ere!"

Surprisingly for such a large city there was not a lot of choice of places to eat...... but all three pizzas I had were exceptional, and a fraction of what they cost in the UK.......

The third looks tastiest to me. I guess because it's more what I associate with conventional pizza (at least as I've always known it.)

The second one looks awfully healthy !

Yes, almost all pizzas here have the tomato sauce on too... the toppings on this one tasted very fresh !

Awfully healthy, and awfully good !! I think it was my favourite.... and I'm not known for going with a healthy option !! LOL

It seems the Ancient Greeks and Romans did make some remote predecessors of pizza after all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza

And now I want the salad pizza! What is it called?

That "vision" look s creepy.

Indeed, though I think the base was a bit bread-ier.

I can remember what it was called, I've never seen it anywhere else.. I think just a freshly baked warm base and add the salad.

Franco thought it looked like someone had thrown their pizza at the wall and it had slid down LOL
