So, pizza, it originates from Naples and was "street-food" until the 1830s when pizza restaurants began to open, and we expected to try a couple whilst there.  We did attempt to eat at a trattoria one night (for a non-pizza meal) but had such a strange experience trying to get a table we gave up and left in the end........

Three pizzerias on one block all belong to one family, they have been there for years and apparently there are 21 siblings/relatives working in them... I'm guessing with some rivalry ! The one with the biggest "queue" outside was Sorbillo, Gino's one, but we found a few doors down another one of the Sorbillo's clan and got a table straight away.

Fast service, a very sweet waitress, and a great pizza (one of the best I've had)...  lovely and fresh ingredients...

as with other pizzerias in Naples, coffee is not an option at the end of a meal, so I had to "make do" with a glass of limoncello whilst Franco enjoyed a lemon dessert.

The next evening, after the aborted attempt at the trattoria we tried another pizzeria further up the street, a very tight fit at a draughty table...but again, once the order was taken the food arrived in next to no time....... so, it's just the base that's baked, with green salad, rocket, tomatoes, mozzarella and parmesan added - it was divine ! well, at least I thought so.....  so fresh !

The next evening we dined at what appeared to be a "chain" restaurant, however the guy seemingly in charge ran it as if it were his own (ie: well).... no food photos except to show the novel way the bread came to the table, and the "themed" crockery, the design of which I thought was great...

On the last evening we decided to eat "early" and managed the get a table in "the" Sorbillo....all I can say is surly staff, very draughty table, BUT great pizza brought to the table unbelievably quickly !!

Apparently a fire virtually gutted this particular restaurant last year, and they were left with a stain on the wall that looked like a vision (??) so left the area undecorated.........  maybe "Picasso woz 'ere!"

Surprisingly for such a large city there was not a lot of choice of places to eat...... but all three pizzas I had were exceptional, and a fraction of what they cost in the UK.......

Well, back from Naples anyway !!

As I posted on my Facebook ............
"......after 3 full days I felt that would my eyes would bleed if faced any longer with the unrelenting graffiti, rubbish and dog poo EVERYWHERE !! ...not to mention scooters and mopeds being driven on the "pavement"..... BUT we did have a LOVELY time, and there where some truly amazing things to see, and we had some of the best pizzas (in their home town) !!!"

I know I can be prone to being a little melodramatic, but it did make me feel slightly ill for some reason, probably the fact that unless you visited somewhere locked away for the most part from the general public there was not one square inch of anything that could be considered looked after or protected.  It's so strange that people can live in such a beautiful country and treat it so badly....maybe the Neapolitans, whilst keeping their mainly non-smiling faces on the level, don't see what, or who, is around them as they barge through on foot, two-wheels or four-wheels !

Of course this is a great generalisation as we meet a number of very charming people like the lovely tour guide who took us around the opera house.

It was also a reminder of what can happen when there are no public funds available to pay for cleaning, restoration, etc and makes one wonder what is going to happen as one's own government is slowly (or not so slowly) cutting back on public service !!

So, where to begin................

All the trains we saw were "decorated" like this, and decidedly unwashed...

...though I must say it was almost like stained glass from the inside, though rather claustrophobic..

....perversely I do like the odd bit of graffiti.... it's almost "Art" !!

....but most of it is just lettering.......

It seemed pointless to take photos of the mindless graffiti and rubbish dumping, but I could only feel sorry for this little chap !!

Probably the most shocking was, considering it to be a Catholic country (and many Neapolitans genuflect in proximity to them), the number churches vandalised and defaced.  I should say that none of my photos show the full frightening scale  of it all in any way.

All in all I'm glad we visited but won't rush back any time soon..... just a thought, maybe they are waiting for Mount Vesuvius to "level the playing field" !!
